The Story behind Fall of Kings

Fall of Kings holds a unique place in David Gemmell’s body of work. It was the final novel in his acclaimed Troy trilogy, but it also became his last book.

David Gemmell had long been fascinated by the legends of ancient Greece and Troy. In the trilogy, he sought to strip away much of the mythology and tell the story of the Trojan War through the eyes of human beings: flawed heroes, warriors, kings, and survivors. By 2006, he was working on Fall of Kings, the concluding volume that would bring the saga to its dramatic end. Throughout the writing of the Troy novels, his wife, Stella Gemmell, played a significant role behind the scenes. She acted as researcher, editor, sounding board, and first reader, helping David shape the historical background and character development of the series.

In July 2006, tragedy struck when David Gemmell died unexpectedly following heart surgery at the age of fifty-seven. At the time of his death, he had completed a substantial portion of Fall of Kings and had left detailed notes and plans for the remainder of the story. Faced with the difficult decision of whether the trilogy should remain unfinished, Stella chose to complete the novel herself. Having worked so closely with David on the series, she knew the characters, themes, and intended ending better than anyone. Drawing on his manuscript, notes, and chapter plans, she painstakingly completed the remaining sections while striving to remain true to his vision and distinctive storytelling style. The result was Fall of Kings, published under the joint authorship of David and Stella Gemmell.

More than simply the conclusion to the Troy trilogy, the novel became a tribute to David’s legacy and a testament to the partnership he and Stella had shared throughout their lives. Readers were not only given the ending of an epic story, but also a final farewell to one of fantasy literature’s most beloved authors. For many fans, Fall of Kings  stands as both the fall of Troy and the final chapter of David Gemmell’s remarkable career, completed with love, dedication, and respect by the person who knew his work best.
