The King Beyond the Gate: First Published in 1985.
Synopsis: The novel focuses on Tenaka Khan, a half-breed warrior, who must unite the Drenai people against the tyrannical and mad Emperor Ceska. Ceska rules with the aid of his monstrous Joinings (half-man, half-beast creatures) and Dark Templars, terrifying warrior-priests. Tenaka, descendant of both Drenai and Nadir, is an outsider, but his lineage and skills make him the only one capable of challenging Ceska’s rule. The story takes place a century after the events of Legend, with the Drenai now under the oppressive rule of the deranged Emperor Ceska. Tenaka assembles a group of courageous individuals who join him in his fight against Ceska, including former soldiers, farmers, and even a warrior king from the Land of Opal. The story culminates in a desperate struggle as Tenaka and his companions attempt to defeat Ceska and his forces, facing overwhelming odds and challenging the very nature of good and evil.
