Echoes Of The Great Song: First Published 1997.
Synopsis: Set in a dying world ruled by the Avatars, an immortal race who sustain their godlike existence through ancient magic crystals. Once masters of a vast empire, the Avatars now face the slow collapse of their civilisation as the power of their crystal network begins to fail, weakened by catastrophic environmental change that has reshaped the world beneath ice and flood. When two moons appear in the sky, an even greater threat arrives: the Almecs, a powerful invading people led by the ruthless Crystal Queen, Almeia. Having escaped their own doomed world, they seek to conquer the Avatars’ domain and demand absolute submission. At the same time, internal tensions rise as the oppressed Vagar population begins to revolt, led by the assassin Mejana, whose personal hatred of the Avatar system drives a secret war from within. As political instability grows, the Avatar leadership attempts desperate measures to survive. They repair ancient power systems, attempt alliances with surrounding peoples, and eventually consolidate their remaining strength in the fortified city of Egaru. But these efforts fracture under the weight of mistrust, competing strategies, and the moral cost of their immortality—an immortality sustained by draining life from others. When war with the Almecs erupts in full, the conflict escalates into a catastrophic siege. Betrayals, failed alliances, and ruthless strategic decisions leave the Avatars exposed at the worst possible moment, as the Crystal Queen discovers a hidden threat that could destroy her empire entirely. The final confrontation becomes a desperate struggle not just for control of the world, but for the survival of an entire species. In the aftermath of the conflict, the cost of immortality, empire, and survival is revealed in full, as the world shifts irrevocably into a new age.
